How NOT To Make Trophies For A Game | Individual Opinion

In July 2008, with firmware update 2.40 Sony introduced the concept of Trophies. They were a way of tracking one’s accomplishments in any given game. Quintessentially, for gamers it meant bragging rights. Sony quite obviously made it mandatory for all developers to integrate the Trophy system in every game they made for the PS3.

On an average every title that had Trophy support had about 50 Trophies. One Trophy being a Platinum Trophy. Being a mild-trophy addict, the joy of collecting a valuable Gold/Platinum Trophy is inexplicable. In a few games, the matter of skill is the dividing factor between you and your loved Trophy. And then there are some other games, such as Assassin’s Creed II and inFamous ( just to name a few ) which award you Trophies for going on an extensive and extremely time-consuming hunt for an outrageous number of in-game collectibles.

In Assassin’s Creed II, it was feathers ( 100 of them, I say! ). In inFamous – Dead Drops ( 32 in all )  and Blast Shards ( curse as much as you want, but 350 Blast Shards ). Even Assassin’s Creed: Brotherhood did not fail to not make the player suffer in such a boring manner: you had Trophies for collecting all of ( no spoiler here ) 101 Borgia Flags and all 10 feathers. I say, whatever happened to Trophies which were awarded based on your skill? Although there isn’t a set of rules for the perfect set of Trophies, they would – in my opinion – be Trophies which take skill and expertise to collect.

Most shooters get it right, or at least Battlefield: Bad Company 2 did. One of the most hard to achieve Trophies in Bad Company 2 was “Destruction 2.0” which required the player to kill 20 people by bringing buildings down on their head. I don’t know how many of you have actually played Bad Company 2, but that was surely one of the tough ones.

I’d love to see games which actually test a gamer’s skill than his willingness to sit tight and play one game for many hours straight doing mindless stuff in order to get a Trophy.

    I actually really dislike trophies that distort online play – all that BC2 trophy did was mean you’d have people playing the trophy, not the game (MAG had big issues with this as well, as did SOCOM:Con and Warhawk). I don’t mind that for lone-wolf games like CoD, but for team-based games it’s a right pain in the rear when you’re trying to play the objective and someone else is camping a building with C4 for a trophy. While there’s skill in it, it’s the ability to _not_ play the game the way it was intended.

    Am a big fan of SOCOM 4’s online trophy list – at least what we’ve seen so far – as it doesn’t include any that affect online gameplay.
