Mass Effect 3 Engine Used For Mass Effect 2 On PS3

Mass Effect 2 was one of the Xbox 360 exclusives which PS3 gamers envied. Was. Not any more, because as you may already know – Mass Effect 2 is releasing on the PS3 on January 18, 2011 in North America and Europe!

And even better news is that the game engine used for creating Mass Effect 3 ( which will release simultaneously on all platforms ) is being used to port the Xbox 360 version over to the PS3. One of the most important advantage of playing Mass Effect 2 on the PS3 are that you don’t have to swap discs since one Blu-ray disk is more than enough to fit the whole game plus all the DLC.

Here’s what BioWare had to say about using the ME3 game engine for ME2: “We’ve actually created the engine for Mass Effect 3 and use that to make Mass Effect 2 PS3. So we took the content and the story and all the other assets that made up Mass Effect 2 and we put them in the Mass Effect 3 engine. And that‘s what we are actually delivering.”

Sadly, since Microsoft has the publishing rights for the first Mass Effect, it’s better to not expect a ME remake for the PS3  since that’s not possible. Since Mass Effect is a unique trilogy with decisions being carried over to sequels ( thereby radically altering the story ) BioWare has cleverly maneuvered around the issue by making an “Interactive Backstory” comic book to bridge the gap in terms of plot elements and radical game-decisions ( which you could have made if you played the first game ).
